Why Is Access to Healthcare Important For Seniors?

Healthcare

The majority of Americans have access to medical care when they need it. Approximately eight percent lack this access because of financial reasons, unemployment, or other factors. Healthcare needs are increasing in the country because the population is aging. How can these individuals continue to find and afford medical services?

Before answering this question, a person must understand what access to healthcare providers means. How can this access be increased? Furthermore, they need to know why this access is so important.

Defining Accessible Healthcare

People often believe anybody who needs healthcare can receive it. Although people cannot be turned away from a hospital because they don’t have medical insurance, the ability to pay is only part of the equation.

Location

A person must be physically able to access medical services. Some insurance plans have networks. The in-network doctors might not be in the insured’s geographical region. Seniors may not be able to drive, so they can’t see these doctors. Local healthcare services benefit older men and women, which is why many senior living communities offer on-site healthcare services and transportation to medical appointments when the senior needs care beyond what the on-site team can provide.

Finances

Gallup reports that 31 million Americans borrowed $74 billion in 2024 to pay for healthcare services, the equivalent of 12 percent of America’s population. Another 58 million citizens report they worry about developing a major medical issue because they would be left with medical debt. As a person ages, the likelihood of medical problems and chronic conditions increases. Healthcare must be affordable so people can prioritize preventative care and access services when needed.

Technology

Technology has changed the way healthcare is delivered today. Sadly, 15 percent of senior households in America lack a computer or internet access, and phone access is also spotty. Seniors need phone and internet service to communicate with medical providers and insurers. Helping seniors learn to use technology is something every family should prioritize, and senior community staff members are available to help residents use computers and the internet.

Common Senior Healthcare Services

Seniors may need to access multiple healthcare providers. They could need an audiologist to address hearing loss, an ophthalmologist to treat vision issues, and a chiropractor for help with back, neck, and joint problems. Many seniors see cardiologists, immunologists, and neurologists. Coordinating appointments and healthcare can be overwhelming, so they miss or don’t follow their treatment plans. Community staff members can help with this.

A senior with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease needs specialized care, and many families find a memory care community that best meets the senior’s needs. The community helps them stay organized and adhere to their treatment plans. When a person lacks access to healthcare, their cognitive decline will continue, and they won’t have the highest quality of life.

Many seniors also struggle to complete basic tasks due to mobility issues. Healthcare providers are needed to help them develop an exercise plan that considers their limitations and will help them rebuild their strength, flexibility, balance, and mobility. Physical therapy may be part of this treatment plan.

Senior living communities want to provide residents with the best quality of life, and healthcare services are needed to achieve this goal. These services help them tackle the challenges of aging head-on. America must prioritize accessible healthcare services for seniors who deserve the best.
